More Than Two Million Cribs Recalled Amidst Fears That Babies May Suffocate or Fall
Attorney Michael Kelly, of Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberg hopes this may mark the end of drop-side cribs.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, June 29, 2010 /Home and Garden PR News/ -- In an effort to address potentially dangerous defects, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of more than 2 million cribs on June 24. Affected brands include Child Craft, Delta Enterprise Corp., Evenflo, Jardine Enterprises, LaJobi, Million Dollar Baby and Simmons Juvenile Products.
All of the models involved in the recall were manufactured between 2000 and 2009. Most of the cribs are drop-side models, with a movable side rail intended to make it easier to lift a child. This rail can malfunction, though, and create a gap where a child's head can become trapped. Even small gaps can cause serious, life-altering injuries.
These models were recalled based on more than 250 reports of the sides detaching and at least 16 reports of infants becoming trapped in defective cribs. The CPSC has reported 32 deaths as a result of drop-side cribs since 2001, and more than nine million drop-side cribs have been recalled in the United States within the past five years.
The current recall is an important safety step necessary to protect our children. Removing potentially injurious infant sleep products from homes across the country will help prevent injuries and discourage manufacturers from providing unsafe products in the first place.
As San Francisco personal injury attorney Michael Kelly of Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger has noted, "Hopefully, these massive recalls will mark the end of the era of drop-side cribs. Although they provide convenience for parents, the risks for infants have proven to be too high."
Kelly, a partner at Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger, was voted the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association "Trial Lawyer of the Year" for 2010. His firm, established on 1959, is a premier personal injury law firm handling cases throughout the country. For more than five decades, attorneys at the firm have successfully represented the rights and interests of infants and children who have suffered life-altering injuries as the result of the negligence of others. Kelly has been involved in over 150 cases resulting in at least a $1,000,000 verdict or settlement in favor of his client.
