Homeowners Face Serious Problems With KITEC Plumbing Systems

September 15, 2011 /Home and Garden PR News/ -- What was once hailed as a superior product for many construction applications, the Kitec Plumbing System--sold under the PlumBetter brand--has caused a lot of headaches and high expenses for unsuspecting homeowners since being introduced in 1995.
A composite pipe made by bonding flexible aluminium tubing between layers of durable polyethylene, Kitec had distinctive properties designed to be:
- Used in harsh soil and water conditions that copper cannot withstand.
- Installed directly below grade or encased in concrete without concern for shifting temperatures.
- Resistant to corrosion (outer and inner layers of its pipes).
- Resistant to termite infestation and other ground contaminants (aluminium core barrier).
Kitec's Fatal Flaw
According to Zippyzebraplumbing.com, the brass fittings used in Kitec pipes--composed of copper and zinc--proved to be defective, not the pipe itself. When exposed to oxygen and moisture, the brass quickly corroded--a process called dezincification. Zinc leached out, leaving a blockage of zinc oxide that restricted water flow to fixtures and appliances, caused pipes to leak and eventually broke apart. Severe water damage often followed.
Since a Kitec system cannot be repaired, defective systems have required replacement--at considerable homeowner expense. The job takes up to four days as plumbers replace all pipe fittings, stop valves and supply lines with non-corrosive parts.
Product Liability Lawsuits Seek to Remedy Damage
According to Kitecplumbing.com, Kitec fittings were first targeted in a class action lawsuit filed in Nevada in 2005. Numerous lawsuits followed throughout the U.S. and a consolidated settlement was concluded in 2009.
